The School of Theatre, Television, and Film presents The Wolves written by Sarah DeLappe and directed for the main stage by Jesca Prudencio. Performed and produced by an all female presenting cast and creative crew. This modern drama explores women’s representation in athletics and theatre arts through a feminist lens.

The Wolves runs Friday, March 18 to Thursday, March 24 on the Don Powell Stage. Tickets are $17 for students and $20 for the general public. SDSU’s production of The Wolves is part of the Arts Alive Spring Discovery Series.

The show follows the lives of young women on a high school soccer team as they face the challenges and pressures of adolescence.

Senior Theatre Performance and Africana Studies student, J’Arrian Wade shares her insights on the show.

“The audience should be looking forward to the raw and intimate moments that are shown within this play,” said Wade. “We follow a group of blunt, unfiltered, oblivious young girls as they battle with the reality of life and how complex it is. The dialogue is quick, witty, and honestly funny.”

Junior Theatre Arts major Lillian Johnson, who plays #46, explains how sports and stage intersect in this production.

“The nature of the show is highly physical and constantly in motion, the audience will be sat as if they are the spectators of a soccer game,” said Johnson. “This cast is so committed and energetic, there is constant movement and action.”

The Wolves celebrates the profound experience of sisterhood in sportsmanship, an experience that is largely underrepresented in media.

“It broadcasts an intimate perspective of the feminine psyche. Through the trauma and mistakes of the characters, we are allowed to see the wounding growth of adolescence,” says Wade.

Johnson shares the importance of sharing stories about young women as they find their personal identity.

“I think very often the experiences of young people, especially young women, are discounted as less valuable, less interesting and less impactful,” shares Johnson. “This show is able to take a microscope to the lives of these nine young women and tell a story that is fun, fresh, relatable and at times absolutely heartbreaking,”
