Introduced in 2014, SDSU Student Success Fee awards are dedicated to supporting enhanced student success through expanded academic-related programs. For the 2017-18 school year, students in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts were awarded over $230,000 in Student Success Fee grants. With these grants students are able to attend national conferences and plan, propose and organize events for the community. Here is a list of the upcoming events, ranging from guest speakers and workshops to campus music festivals:

SDSU Connection - Great Wall String Quartet

SDSU Connection is a week-long music festival which provides students access to the internationally-acclaimed Great Wall String Quartet for a series of masterclasses, lectures, and performances. Additionally, the quartet will perform with the SDSU Symphony Orchestra at SDSU Live! at Jacobs Music Center on April 8, 2018. Students will come away from the SDSU Connection experience with a plethora of new musical knowledge and inspiration.

Perspective Lecture Series

Perspective is a lecture series featuring prominent artists who participate in activism, performance and community engagement projects. These dynamic artists will present their work to promote thoughtful discourse, awareness, activism and innovation. Below are the two upcoming lectures in the series.

April 26, 2018 - Roxanne Jackson

Roxanne Jackson is a ceramic sculptor and the founder of the Nasty Women movement, which has raised over $200,000 for Planned Parenthood through a series of international community driven exhibitions in which artists are actively fundraising to support threatened rights of women and minorities.

Guerrilla Girls

Feminist artist activists, Guerilla Girls, wear gorilla masks in public and use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose gender and ethnic bias, as well as corruption in politics, art, film, and pop culture. Their anonymity keeps the focus on the issues, and away from who we might be. They will visit campus for a two-part event featuring a multimedia lecture and a hands-on art and activism workshop.

3D Design Symposium

The SDSU 3D Design Symposium consists of a series of lectures, workshops, and individual critiques from experienced 3D art and design professionals. Elissa Auther, Barbra Cooper, Jennifer Navva Milliken, and Darren Bader will visit campus and share their knowledge of museum curation, art and design criticism, visual communication and more. Lectures are free and open to the public. Studio visits, workshops and forums are limited to SDSU students only and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

San Diego Guitar Festival

The San Diego Guitar Festival will enhance academic and professional experiences for a multidisciplinary team of students who will collaborate to produce the festival, featuring performances by world-class concert artists, masterclasses, workshops, and lectures. The festival supports hands-on work internships for a diverse group of students through Faculty-Student mentoring, working on a range of components including videography, graphic design, marketing, education, and community outreach. The 2018 San Diego Guitar Festival will bring globally recognized guitarists to SDSU.

Campanile Music Festival

The Campanile Music Festival continues to bring extraordinary artists to SDSU each year, providing students with a rare opportunity to collaborate with working performers who have achieved success in their fields. This year’s Campanile Music Festival will host the Formosa String Quartet, winner of both First Prize and Amadeus Prize at the London International String Quartet Competition. Students will engage with the artists in a series of masterclasses, chamber music readings, open rehearsals and concerts.

Factory Seconds Brass Trio

The Factory Seconds Brass Trio is comprised of Jack Sutte, trumpet; Jesse McCormick, horn; and Rick Stout, trombone. Each musician is also a member of the Cleveland Orchestra, dubbed “America’s finest orchestra” by the New York Times. Factory Seconds will come to campus to work directly with students in both instrumental masterclasses and ensemble settings. Select students will rehearse with Factory Seconds on a piece to be performed for a public audience.

Alexander Technique Workshop

The Alexander process shines light on inefficient habits of movement and patterns of accumulated tension, and has a long history of helping instrumentalists reduce the likelihood of injury and perform with less stress. Eileen Troberman, Alexander Specialist, will teach a series of four workshops through the Spring 2018 semester.

Artist to Artist Studio Exchange

Artist to Artist Studio Exchange will bring visiting dance artists to SDSU one Friday per month in the Spring 2018 semester. Each artist will teach a two-hour movement technique class focusing on different dance genres, which will expand students’ repertoire, problem-solving skills and knowledge of the dance form. The visiting artists will also share their research and Dance field experience during lectures, which are open to the public.
