Student Success Fee Event Preview

In the Fall 2014 semester, SDSU instituted a Student Success Fee dedicated to support enhancing student success at the college level through expanded academic-related programs. As the number of student applicants has grown over the years, the race to receive funds for various programs has become increasingly more competitive. The School of Music and Dance is proud to announce that five Student Success Fee applications have received funding. Here’s a preview of what you can expect from these Music and Dance student projects in the upcoming semester:
Campanile Music Festival
April 4-7, 2017

The Campanile Music Festival exists to bring critically acclaimed and accomplished musicians from around the United States to the SDSU campus, offering students and local music lovers the opportunity to learn from and interact with these renowned artists beyond the concert hall. For the next festival week, visiting musicians include international Naumberg Competition winner and creative composer Clancy Newman, two-time Grammy award nominee and Marlboro Music Festival performer Jesse Mills, and 2014 Avery Fischer Career Grant recipient and Calder String Quartet violist Jonathan Moerschel. All events are free and open to the public.
San Diego Guitar Festival

The San Diego Guitar Festival provides unprecedented access to performers and educators at a level that SDSU students and local music lovers would not otherwise experience. This year’s festival features two of the most critically praised performer-pedagogues in the field of music, Best Instrumental Solo Grammy-Winner David Russell and Musicologist/Historical Performance Specialist Paul O’Dette. The combination of concerts and masterclasses offered throughout the festival provide one-of-kind educational experiences and quality entertainment from world-renowned guitarists.
First Fridays at the Studio Theater

First Fridays at the Studio Theater is a monthly series of guest artist masterclasses and public lectures. The series brings regional professional dance artists to SDSU to provide students the opportunity to interact and engage with accomplished Dance Artists working in a range of dance styles. Each event includes a 10am technique class in which guest artists work directly with students (dance majors only) followed by a 12pm lecture (open to all students) covering various subjects pertaining to success as a Dance Artist. Artists to be featured include Shamell Bell and Ana Maria Alvarez.
Dance Guest Artists Residency

SDSU’s Dance Department brings two guest artists to San Diego, each for a week, to share their expertise with dance majors. The chosen artists, Darrell Jones (March 7-15) and Shelly Senter (March 20-25), each provide a perspective that is aligned with and builds on studies of dance at SDSU. They teach technique classes, direct rehearsal processes to create new work (Darrell Jones), re-create historical work (Shelly Senter), and engage in dialogue with students about their extended professional careers as dancers, teachers, and performers. The rehearsal process is open for any students, faculty, or community members who wish to observe, and each weeklong process will result in a final culminating performance.
SDSU Jazz Collective CD Project
Spring 2017
The SDSU Jazz Studies and Recording Technology & Audio Design program come together for a recording session utilizing a local professional recording studio. This collaboration seeks to involve every jazz ensemble at SDSU as well as recording technology students. Additionally, it will feature local guest artist Charles McPherson, saxophone and two alumni jazz groups, the Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio and Alumni Jazz Orchestra. The end result of the project will be a professionally produced CD that features SDSU students and alumni including original compositions.
