Something Great is Happening at SDSU
September 28, 2016
On Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, SDSU will host a 24-hour online giving day. In PSFA, funds will be raised to support student success. The college bridges curriculum and the community by encouraging students to seek internships, travel abroad to conduct research, attend professional conferences, and perform publicly. This type of meaningful experience combined with traditional classroom experience prepares graduates to be workforce ready. All funds raised during The Great Give will be used to assist students engaging in these high-impact practices. Increasingly, the university has focused on creating multiple, diversified revenue streams to support transformational experiences for students. As the allocation of State of California resources has diminished over the last decade, the university has moved from being State-supported to a public-private partnership. Today, approximately 20% of the university budget is allocated from the State of California. One of the new revenue streams – philanthropy – has been important in helping the university and the college to provide high-quality programs and maintain high-impact practices. Due in part to philanthropic support, a record 2,400 SDSU students studied abroad last year. This type of experience helps students to develop leadership skills, critical thinking, and to embrace cultural diversity. Additionally, in PSFA alone, more than 700 students participated in a professional, for-credit internship last year. This link between curriculum and/or major and experience helps student to foster professional preparation and communication skills. The Great Give is designed to engage a large audience and allows alumni, donors, family, faculty, students, and staff to directly impact student success at SDSU.
