Screening Circle explores LGBTQ+ community
Students are invited to join in the discussion about drag culture and gender expression.

PR pros at the San Diego State University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies have set the stage for a discussion about the LGBTQ+ community and drag culture in San Diego.
Going on its third semester, this Screening Circle will highlight the LGBTQ+ residents and allies by viewing an episode of HBO’s original series “We’re Here” on Wed. March 16 at 4 p.m. at Tula Community Center.
The reality series features drag queens Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela Laquifa Wadley touring the country. They help small-town LGBTQ+ residents step outside their comfort zone by producing a local drag show in each town they visit.
Screening Circle uses popular media to ignite conversations surrounding social issues.
“Screening Circle cultivates a representative and inclusive community,” director of JMS Dr. Temple Northup said. “Students inspire change using skills learned within JMS to rewrite their own narratives.”
With more than 4% of San Diego’s population identifying as LGBTQ+, many of their stories are yet to be told. Screening Circle creates a safe place for the stories of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community and drag culture to be amplified.
The event will include interactive games and movie-theater style snacks. Attendees will experience a drag performance by Amber St. James, discussion with cast members from the show, along with giveaways and free merchandise.
“Screening Circle is an opportunity to engage and learn through media about social issues,” Lauren Farberman, the lead planner of the Screening Circle said. “Students will be a part of the discussion for a more progressive community.”
Screening Circle will take place on March 16 at 4 p.m. at Tula Community Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Following SDSU’s COVID-19 guidelines, guests are required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend. Facial coverings will be required at all times.
