Valerie Stahl is an Assistant Professor of City Planning in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University. Her mixed-methods research focuses on three key areas of urban policy and planning: affordable housing, community development, and zoning. She primarily considers planning processes in neighborhoods that are facing pressures of austerity, gentrification, and displacement in large U.S. cities. Stahl strives to support advocacy efforts for racial and economic justice through working alongside residents and non-profit groups. Her research has been used in campaigns on rent stabilization, the privatization of public housing, and fair housing initiatives. Prior to her Ph.D., Valerie worked at the Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C. She holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from Columbia University, a master's in Urban Affairs from Sciences Po Paris, and a BA in Social and Cultural Analysis and Romance Languages from New York University.
