School of Communication Initiates Critical Discussions with Brown Bag Series

“(Re)Frame Across Disciplines: Roundtable Discussion on Anti-Oppression Work” series fosters community, and inspires a more just world.

Reprising last year’s successful discussion series, the SDSU School of Communication announces the 2021-22 Brown Bag Series. The year-long discussion is presented by the Institute for Dialogue and Social Justice, the Center for Inclusive Excellence, and the Center for Transformative Justice seeks not only to identify and deconstruct forces of oppression, but to also imagine, identify, and contribute to the construction of a better, more just world.

These discussions bring the community together and offer insight into anti-oppression on a large scale.

This year, the topic is “(Re)Frame Across Disciplines: Roundtable Discussion on Anti-Oppression Work” and each month will focus on a different discipline or field, and feature panels of scholars, students, and community partners. They are coordinated by Professor Yea-Wen Chen, the Director of the Institute for Dialogue and Social Justice.

“The (Re)Frame Discussion Series is a unique space that brings together students, community members, and faculty members to share, listen, reflect, and talk together about important yet challenging topics such as structural racism and intersectional oppressions,” said Chen. “The (Re)Frame Series is also unique in that it enters into scholarly conversations collaboratively through panelists’ lived experiences and critical reflections in the hope of (re)framing heavy topics such as racism and oppression differently.”

Upcoming events will include:

• November 19: “Anti-Oppression work in the Context of Business” is the next discussion to take place on Nov. 19, featuring Dr. Beth G. Chung.

• February 18: “Anti-Oppression Work with University Change Agents” (tentative).

• March 18: “Anti-Oppression Work in the Dance and Performance Context” featuring

• April 15: “From Allyship to Co-Conspirator in Anti-Oppression Work” featuring Drs. Tonika Green, Lambros, and Richardson.
