Tony Nguyen is the School of Public Affairs 2021 Outstanding Master of Public Administration (MPA) Graduate.

When Nguyen, first joined the MPA program after completing his B.A. in Public Administration at SDSU because he was interested in learning how local governments can stimulate their local economies from local business programs to city-wide marketing programs and wanted to learn more about economic development. “I am still interested in economic development, but my focus has moved towards affordable housing due to my Capstone project. Interviewing various individuals involved in housing from all economic sectors really inspired me to want to learn more about it. After I graduate I hope I can get involved in housing in the nonprofit or public sector”, said Nguyen.

During his time in the MPA program, Nguyen completed an internship with the City of El Cajon. Nguyen said, “The various projects really kept me on my toes as I had to prioritize multiple projects at once, and sometimes, priorities had to change after City Council Meetings. This taught me the value of remaining flexible as we had to be responsive to the needs of the residents of El Cajon and their chosen representatives. Aside from lessons learned from doing the work, I also learned a lot about leadership and morale from just being in the office.”

Nguyen’s words for the MPA Class of 2021 were, “My hope for the future of the graduating class of 2021 is that we all strive to lead through community-mindedness. No matter where we are, I hope that as leaders, whether it’s through a formal title or an informal role, we continue to help members of our community. Especially during this pandemic, understanding, respect, and compassion have become such important traits for the wellbeing of our family, friends, and those we serve as public administrators.” He closed by sharing some advice for incoming MPA students, “My advice for incoming graduate students is to use class discussions as an opportunity to connect with your fellow colleagues. Discussions not only help broaden your understanding of class topics, but give you opportunities to really learn from different perspectives. After a semester of discussing and at times debating, you might find bonds forming that will positively influence your own experience as a Graduate Student.”
