First generation student Julz Fernandez was named 2022 outstanding student by the School of Music and Dance. Julz fully immersed herself in the SDSU Dance department and worked as a stage manager, class representative, student assistant, teacher’s assistant, and aided in writing student success fee proposals to support special projects.

Fernandez is thankful for the scholarship she was awarded to aid her time at SDSU. “Coming into college as a first generation college student, I was so honored to be awarded the George Willis Dance Scholarship in my first year. This scholarship was a tremendous help to both myself and my family. It allowed me to live a little more comfortably being a full-time student with a part-time job,” shares Fernandez.

“The value I found in this scholarship is that it is nice to be recognized for my hard work, and it makes me want to work even harder. I value working hard for my loved ones and myself to be the best version of myself and provide for myself and my family.”

After graduation, Fernandez hopes to become a dance educator and inspire other students through dance as life, joy, and movement therapy.

Fernandez shares her advice for incoming students, “what you get out of your education is what you put in. Apply yourself to your fields of study, and take care of your body while doing so. We are all humans, our body is an entire system, shares Fernandez. “Take care of your mental and physical well-being every day to continue to be able to work as hard as you can! You can do this!”
