Outstanding graduate Chrislyn Chovanec plans to use her degree in public administration to serve her community and create effective public policy.
In addition to her studies, Chovanec has served as a community service officer for the San Diego State University Police Department.
“Through this job, there have been many learning experiences which include interacting with the public positively and professionally, the importance of listening to the community specifically in policy creation when a problem arises, and the patience involved in effective conflict resolution,” said Chovanec.
Chovanec seeks to lead with empathy as she emerges into a career in public service.
For her fellow graduates, Chovanec sends this message. “There are a lot of issues that need fixing in this world and I hope that my graduating class will be a positive change in our society and continue to improve our communities through kindness and acceptance.”
Offering advice to incoming freshmen Chovanec said, “Get involved early in organizations and clubs that sound interesting to you, four year goes by very quickly and you should take advantage of all the opportunities. Have a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities and meet with your academic advisor often. Lastly, prioritize yourself and put mental health first, and don't be afraid to reach out for help.”
