Julia Kramer’s Passion for Learning Leads to a Promising Career in Criminal Justice

Kramer is the School of Public Affairs 2020 outstanding Master of Criminal Justice (MCJC) graduate.

During her time in the SDSU Master of Criminal Justice program, Julia Kramer completed an internship at the Office of the Public Defender and U.S. Probation Office, and served as a research assistant at the School of Public Affairs. As an intern, Kramer attended multiple trials, accompanied investigators on interviews, and conducted independent visits to jails all across San Diego, which gave her a significant insight into the justice system. Moreover, she was able to experience the federal side of the justice system, receiving mentorship in both supervisions and investigations.

Kramer’s family has often expressed their pride in her openness and curiosity, which has allowed her to continue learning and growing. According to Kramer, navigating higher education requires an openness to unlearn and relearn constantly. While people frequently associate her curiosity with stubbornness, they also find that it’s the trait that got her to where she is today. She believes that curiosity has opened doors that have led to new experiences and allowed for growth every step of the way.

After graduation, Kramer’s goal is to take her knowledge of research and literature into the field of investigations at U.S. Probation in order to contribute to the administration of equitable justice. Her hope for 2020’s MCJC graduating class is that their hard work and education doesn’t end with graduation. While a university and classroom environment offers a space for challenging conversations and continuous learning, she hopes that they all continue to create those spaces within the field of criminal justice.
