Traditionally serving as the kickoff to the new Academic year, the virtual All-University Convocation was held Aug. 19 where Dr. Kurt Lindemann was recognized by SDSU President Adela de la Torre. Professor Lindemann is among six faculty members to receive the 2020-21 SDSU Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award for outstanding contributions to the university and his respective field.
The convocation is an opportunity to reflect on faculty and staff merit while looking to the year ahead. De la Torre says, “‘[as] we embark on another academic year, [the recipients’] exemplary dedication motivates us to keep striving for excellence and to transform the lives of our students.”’
“As a community, we will demonstrate this same resilience at scale this year: accomplishing the goals in our strategic plan, advancing SDSU Mission Valley, and adding value to our transnational region for generations to come,” de La Torre states.
Dr. Peggy Shannon, Dean of PSFA says she “can’t think of anyone more deserving of [this award].”
“His teaching and research not only serves the students within the College of Professional Studies, his work brings prestige to the entire SDSU community” she states.
Professor Lindemann serves as the Director of Graduate Studies; he is also Director of the Center for the Study of Media and Performance, an interdisciplinary center housed at SDSU, which focuses on the critical inquiry of live art and screen culture.
His work primarily examines communicative performances of identity in organizational and mediated contexts, and most recently he focuses on men’s narratives of grief. Professor Lindemann’s work has been featured in books, scholarly journals and popular press magazines, including Qualitative Inquiry, Text and Performance Quarterly, Western Journal of Communication, Southern Journal of Communication, and Rebel Magazine.
Professor Lindemann earned a B.A. in Communication and Theatre Arts and Written Communication from Eastern Michigan University, he received an M.S. in Communication from Illinois State University in 1995 and an M.A. in English Language and Literature from Eastern Michigan University in 1997. He earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 2006 when he also began teaching at SDSU.
“His commitment to using performance as a method of scholarly inquiry have opened avenues to understanding for many, many students and colleagues,” Professor Heather Canary, Director of the School of Communication, remarks.
Professor Canary began working with Professor Lindemann in July 2017 when she came to SDSU. However, the two had been peers as doctoral students at Arizona State University and even had a couple of classes together.
“He is the consummate professional in the School of Communication, contributing to our initiatives and governance with collegiality and his ever-present sense of humor,” Professor Canary states.
