Hometown:

I was born and raised in Fremont, California (the Bay Area!).

Major and year in school:

I am a Health Communication major graduating this semester.

How did you decide on SDSU?

I knew I wanted to go to SDSU because of their Health Communication major. SDSU is one of the few colleges in California that offer this specialized major: exploring elements of regular communication studies and applying them to health settings. More than just a competitive scholastic offering, I ultimately chose SDSU because of the community! I transferred from a commuter school, and it was hard to connect with other students. Touring the campus, I noticed how vibrant student life was.

What’s your favorite part about your field/major?

My favorite part of the Health Communication field is its commitment to excellence and striving towards systemic improvement. A major focus in Health Communication is advocating for health equity. Of course, complex problems require complex solutions. Health Communication courses prepare students to go into their field with an understanding of barriers and solutions to creating a more affirming and equitable healthcare system. It feels like we can make a real difference in the world 😊

What does it take to be successful in your major?

I think to be truly successful in Health Communication, I needed to feel comfortable asking questions and making connections with previous courses. There is not a one-size-fits all rule or solution for health communication practices/issues. Speaking up in class when I have been confused or curious about concepts has drastically changed how I learn and understand course material.

What do you hope to do in the future?

The possibilities are limitless! For now, I am considering going into patient advocacy or health education.

Any faculty to shout out and why?

So many! To name a few: Dr. Donovan, Dr. Dykstra-DeVette, Dr. Martinez, and Ms. Ashley Nuckels Cuevas. While these four instructors have vastly different teaching styles and course subjects, each one has inspired me with their passion, kindness, and wisdom. Without a doubt, any of these four professors would go the extra mile to help their students (and have done so with me!).

Favorite place to eat on campus, what do you get?

I am a bit late to the game, but I enjoy a good avocado hummus sandwich from Olive Oil!

Favorite place to visit in San Diego?

I love Liberty Station in Point Loma! There is so much history there. Additionally, you can walk or run on the trails by the bay, shop and eat in the Public Market, and they always have an event going on.
