Scenic design professor Charles Murdock Lucas was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the 2023 academic year. Each year the Fulbright Scholar program grants 850 professors with a Ph. D. to teach and conduct research internationally.

Murdock is one of only 35 theatrical designers to be appointed Fulbright Scholars worldwide since the program was created in 1946.

Murdock will be teaching stage design for theatre and opera in Bulgaria during the 2023 academic year. In addition to teaching, he will be designing a new theatrical production for the Sofia Puppet Theatre and conducting Bulgarian scenographic practice.

β€œI look forward to being immersed in Bulgarian culture and living in the beautiful capital city of Sofia. It is a lovely country with amazing theatrical artists,” said Lucas. β€œIt is an honor to represent San Diego State University's School of Theatre, Television, and Film, and be a part of the fantastic cultural exchange between the USA and Bulgaria that the Fulbright Program makes possible.”
