In Fall 2021, Arts Alive SDSU will continue the Discovery Series events for the program’s second year. Working with the School of Art and Design, the School of Music and Dance, and the School of Theatre, Television, and Film, Arts Alive SDSU will showcase a selection of curriculum-based art exhibitions and performances featuring student artists.
With the support of One SDSU, Arts Alive will host interdisciplinary panel conversations in correlation with each event listed below. The dialogue will feature guest artists and SDSU faculty from various academic units, who will discuss how the arts impact the understanding or critical interpretation of cultural topics.
By bridging the arts with the humanities and sciences, the Discovery Series affirms the value of the arts as an essential research practice.
Both In-Person and Online
The inaugural year of the Discovery Series coincided with the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which required Arts Alive SDSU to adopt online platforms to present each event. Now, as the campus has resumed in-person instruction for Fall 2021, and many of the arts events will take place in galleries and live performance venues, Professor Eric Smigel, Chair of Arts Alive SDSU, recognizes the practicality of retaining the online panel discussions.
“The webinar format granted all of us access to guest artists and scholars who might not otherwise have been available,” said Smigel. “This proved to be such a valuable opportunity for our students that we’ve decided to continue with the online discussions this season, even when the corresponding art event will be produced in person.”
The interdisciplinary panels will begin in late September.
